March marks a significant milestone for us: this year, Babelscape turns ten.
What started as a focus on language-independent semantics and multilinguality has grown into a company where research and innovation are the core intelligence behind everything we build.
As we celebrate this decade, we want to share a brief recap of the journey that brought us here: a path paved by scientific excellence and real-world impact.
Where it all began
Founded in 2016, Babelscape was born with a groundbreaking mission: to overcome language barriers and enable the understanding of text across all languages and domains. From day one, we have walked two paths in symphony:
- Research: pushing the boundaries of Natural Language Processing (NLP) and Semantic AI.
- Innovation: transforming those breakthroughs into high-impact, scalable products.
Operating at the intersection of pure research, innovation and scalable development is what truly sets us apart.
From peer review to production
Our evolution has been fueled by major research milestones, including:
- two ERC Grants
- a strong track record of publications at top-tier conferences such as ACL, EACL, AAAI, IJCAI, and EMNLP
- 50 high-impact research papers published over the past decade
- partners in six EU research and innovation projects
- the upcoming 2026 release of the Minerva LLM, developed jointly with Sapienza NLP
Research at Babelscape is an active process. Our journey began with mastering the building blocks of language, drawing on foundational resources like BabelNet and tackling core tasks such as Word Sense Disambiguation, Entity Linking, Relation Extraction, and Sentiment & Emotion Analysis. These semantic capabilities allowed us to augment our own Large Knowledge Graph, WordAtlas, providing the structured foundation for accurate multilingual understanding.
Throughout this time, we have advanced the state of the art in Natural Language Processing, translating research into real-world impact. Founded as a Sapienza University of Rome spin-off, we have grown into a key player in the Rome Technopole ecosystem. Today, we have evolved this expertise for the era of LLMs, moving far beyond basic chatbots toward sophisticated structured RAG architectures. By connecting generative AI to knowledge bases, we ensure that our models deliver results grounded in factual reality.
While there is a strong trend toward generic one-size-fits-all AI, Babelscape stands as a specialized Deep Tech Hub. We operate as an agile, research-led team dedicated to building tailor-made solutions that combine scientific expertise with the flexibility to develop high-precision tools addressing complex, specific needs.
